No one actually knows. That's the point. (I think it's a song thing. Country-based song contest.)

I believe I have seen it described as "Euro"vision "Song" "Contest".

Each country in Europe gets one entry and then they're whittled down via international panel of judges and fan votes after live performances over a series of days. Except, as far as I can tell, the people of the countries have no say in who their country's submission is in the first place, which makes the whole thing seem rather suspect to me!

As the others have alluded to, the fun of it is watching the costumes and the pomp of it all.
